Box Score
Throggs Neck, NY – Junior center Robert Benton (Montgomery, Ala./G.W. Carver) (Montgomery, AL/G.W. Carver) scored a season high 21 points shooting a perfect 8-8 from the field, however his efforts weren’t enough to upend the defending CUNY champion Lehman Lightning who picked up their fourth win of the year 89-69 Friday in Men’s Basketball competition at Maritime College.

The Privateers had a total of three players finishing the game in double digits with Benton picking up 21, while junior forwards Jonathan Holler (N. Tonawanda, N.Y./Cardinal O'Hara) (N. Tonawanda, NY/Cardinal O’Hara) and Gerard Danzy (Monroeville, Ala./Hillcrest) (Monroeville, AL/Hillcrest) each had 14 points. Both Holler and Danzy have been a huge part of this Privateer team so far this season, combined they have scored a total of 165 points and 82 rebounds. Against Lehman, Holler pulled down eleven boards, while Danzy made use of his leaping abilities taking nine rebounds out of the hands of the oversized Lightning team.

Lehman maintained a double-digit lead for a majority of the game thanks to the downtown shooting of senior forward Miguel Jorge (Bronx, NY/Centro de EDR) who made four of his six shots from beyond the arc. Jorge was one of three members of the Lightning who finished in double-digits. Junior guard Willy Vargas (Bronx, NY/DeWitt Clinton) and sophomore forward Derek Moses (Bronx, NY/DeWitt Clinton) added 18 a piece.

Once again, the Privateers played a solid 40 minutes of basketball, battling until the end. They have showed a lot of heart so far this year as they have faced possibly the toughest schedule in the program’s history. This week alone, Maritime has faced the defending champions in both the CUNY and in the Skyline against Old Westbury, a game that saw the Privateers come so close to upsetting the Panthers.

Next up for the Maritime is yet another tough game when they take on Army on their home court next Thursday. Then they will be back at home on the Saturday the 11th when the Rams of Farmingdale State come to town in the Privateers second conference match-up of the year.
